What are ACEs?   ACEs are adverse childhood experiences that harm children’s developing brains and lead to changing how they respond to stress and damaging their immune systems so profoundly that the  effects show up decades later.  ACEs cause much of our burden of chronic disease, most mental illnesses and are at the root of most violence.

ACEs come from the CDC-Kaiser Adverse Childhood Experience study; a groundbreaking study that discovered that childhood trauma leads to the adult onset of chronic diseases, depression and other mental illness, violence, and being a victim of violence as well as financial and social problems.

ACEs are common; nearly 64% of adults have at least 1.  They don’t occur alone so if you have one then there is an 84% chance that you have 2 or more.  The more ACEs you have the greater the risk of chronic disease, mental illness, violence and being a victim of violence.

Your ACE score is determined by taking a questionnaire that focuses on events from your childhood like physical, sexual, or verbal abuse; physical or emotional neglect, if you witnessed a parent being abused or if one or more of your parents were alcoholic or drug dependent.   The highest score you can receive is 10.  People with a score of 4 are twice as likely to be smokers and seven times more likely to be alcoholics; furthermore having a score of 4 increases the risk of emphysema or chronic bronchitis by nearly 400% and attempted suicide by 1200%.  People with high ACE scores are more likely to be violent, have more marriages, more broken bones, more drug prescriptions, more depression, and more autoimmune diseases.  An ACE score of 6 or higher are at risk of their life span being shortened by 20 years.

You can’t change your ACE score because it focuses on events from your past which cannot be changed; however you can change your outcome by becoming aware of your score and how it can affect your life.  You can build resilience which will drastically alter the outcome of your life and how you cope with the trauma of your past.  Counseling and therapy are great options for helping you cope, but a life coach that specializes in childhood trauma can be a great help also.  Your coach will help you identify which traumas are likely holding you back and assist you with overcoming them.

How is your energy?  Is it positive or negative?  How do you feel about life and especially how do you feel about your life?  Do you have healthy energy about life?

It’s true that the type of energy you put out into the universe is the exact same type of energy the universe will give back to you.  When it comes to healing from trauma you must be mindful of your thoughts and the type of energy you are giving off.  It matters a great deal because your energy type is directly related to how well you will heal from your trauma or traumas.

It’s easy to have negative thoughts surrounding the trauma you experienced but you must make the conscious effort to dismiss those thoughts.  Negative energy breeds negativity and we all know that negativity serves no good purpose.

You want to have as much positive energy as you can get on a consistent basis because when you supply the universe with positive energy, the universe will give it right back to you.  Now I’m not saying that nothing bad will ever happen to you when you are giving off positive energy; I’m saying that if you are surrounded by positivity  then you will be much better equipped to handle a challenging situation. Being positive doesn’t happen by accident either.  You have to make the decision yourself then shift your focus.  Instead of thinking of all the bad things that could happen in your life or a certain situation; think of all the awesome possibilities that could come your way.  Once you make the shift you will notice the difference in how people respond to you and how great opportunities will find their way into your view.  Yes I am also talking about the law of attraction but I will not get into that right now, maybe at a later date.

No doubt about it, healing from trauma is very difficult, complicated and time- consuming.  We all know that healing takes time, some of us more than others.  When people seem to heal much faster than others, doesn’t it make you wonder how they  did it?  Based on my experiences and observations, I’ve noticed that people that seem to heal faster used time to take action.  They did not just let time idle by.  Everyone needs time to heal but not everybody uses  time to heal.

When it comes to healing from trauma think about it like a suitcase that won’t close; because you’ve got too much stuff and many unnecessary things in it.  You’ve even got things in it that you didn’t even know were there!  You cannot go on your new journey, i.e. your life free from the effects of trauma until you have packed and closed your suitcase properly.

First things first.  You must open that suitcase completely, exposing everything inside.  This will allow you to take a look at all the things you’ve been either avoiding or dragging around with you everywhere you go.  Next you’re going to pick up each item one by one and decide whether it stays or goes.  Everything in the “goes” pile gets placed aside for closer examination.  You must take all the time you need to analyze these items.  You may even discover that some items were placed in your suitcase without your knowledge by someone else!  These items could be self doubt, low self-esteem, negative body image, over- eating or drug addiction.  With so many traumas to heal from of course it will take time to get through them all but it will be time well spent.  You are worth all the time it takes to heal and begin living the life you’ve always dreamed about.  Everything in the “stays” pile must also be examined for confirmation that it indeed belongs in the “stays” pile.  These items could be intelligence, talent, loyalty, honesty, courage, or spirituality.  These items are to be carefully folded and placed back in the suitcase neatly so that you can see clearly all the positive things you need to keep with you.

You cannot live your absolute best days if trauma is still affecting your life.  A trauma recovery coach can help you unpack your suitcase and sort all those items with you.  Yes your trauma recovery will still take time even with a coach, but the time it takes to recover will be greatly reduced if you have a coach to help you through it.

Sometimes you do things that are destructive to you or someone you love.  Most of the time you really don’t want to do it but you do it anyway.  You then feel guilty and disgusted with yourself.  It makes you say mean and hateful things to yourself.  I used to do that.  It was a nightmarish pattern that seemed to never end.  I started to believe the lies I told myself like: “You are just a low life disgusting human being”.  Since I believed it, that’s how I behaved.  I was very deceitful and manipulative.  That is how I thought I had to survive in this world.

I was wrong about myself.  It took a long time for me to realize that I’m not a bad person, I was suffering from bad experiences I had as a child.  Once I started saying to myself “I’m suffering”, I then began the process of healing and ending that suffering.  It was a long journey but I was determined to live a much better life than the one I currently had.  My suffering started to come to an end when I started to love myself.  I mean fully, completely and unconditionally.  I learned to be the love of my life instead of constantly looking for it from others.  Love truly is a healer.  When you truly love yourself it shows in all you do and say to yourself and others.  Love is best received through acts of love rather than words.  Instead of trying to feel love for yourself, show love to yourself….then you will have the feeling and once you do, you will not want to feel any other way about yourself.

According to Webster’s dictionary; it is a deeply distressing or disturbing experience.  To put it a bit clearer it is very harmful experiences or situations that make it difficult for a person to cope, leaving them powerless to the situation.  Unfortunately some of us have been in situations where trauma occurs quite frequently and it then becomes a part of our common human experience.

There are so many different experiences that can cause trauma, so we are going to focus on those caused by adverse childhood experiences (ACE).  Those ACE cause trauma, which if left untreated , causes adverse adult conditions like obesity, substance abuse, smoking, suicide attempts, COPD, heart disease, diabetes and a host of other problems.

Many of us have suffered from some form of trauma.  Whether it’s losing a loved one to death or separation or being physically or verbally abused by a care giver; it all causes trauma.  With the divorce rate being around 50% it’s safe to say that at least half of us have experienced that trauma as a child.

The trauma you experienced as a child will continue to impact your life until you address it, challenge it and begin to move past it.  Many of us are so stuck in our trauma mind that we cannot even see what it is and what it is actually doing to us.  It has a major impact on our health and mental stability.  It causes lack of physical activity which leads to obesity.  It is the reason you smoke or have alcoholism, diabetes, COPD, heart disease, and even cancer.

Sometimes I felt like a burning flame trapped inside a block of ice that was created  by layers of lies, bad experiences, and fear.  Once I figured out the lies I believed, such as “I’m not worthy”, and “I’m not good enough”, were in fact not true at all then I began to burn a little hotter under the ice.  As the ice began to melt I  noticed the other layers that had been keeping my light trapped started to dissolve.  The more I challenged those lies the hotter I burned and the brighter my light shined.  After so many years trapped beneath the cold, numbing ice I had finally set myself free and now I dance and rejoice in the light.

Once we start to stare our fears square in the eyes and dare to challenge them we start a ripple in the universe that turns into a tidal wave that washes our souls clean of the negativity that kept us from living the life we truly desired.

Overcoming the effects of bad experiences is never easy but it is certainly possible.
